It?s official: Last week, I finally bit the bullet and hired someone to kick my butt.
Did I spring for a drill sergeant? A wicked stepmother? An external version of my pesky inner critic? None of the above?after a too-many-years-to-count hiatus, I finally decided to revisit personal training.
I?m more than aware that a personal trainer is a cushy perk, indeed (and it has been years since I?ve thought I was worth it or could afford it). But something in my gut tells me that it?s time to renew my on-and-off love affair with the weight room and my nemesis, the foam roller. My trainer loves to torture my IT bands and quads with this innocuous-looking piece of foam, which physical therapists use to massage hard-to-reach muscles and release stubborn fascia.
Will training be easy? No way. I was reminded of this as I gasped my way through my first session (and days of sore muscles suggesting I haven?t been quite as strenuous with my recent workouts as I might think). Here?s why I know it will be rewarding:
? It will keep me on my toes. I?m a creature of habit, and unless I?m told to vary my habits, I simply won?t. My weekly sweat session will give me new moves and new motivations to keep my muscles confused and my mind engaged.
? It will keep me on track. The sheer investment means I?ll be religious about my sessions (whether or not I feel like it).
? I?m worth it. Several recent events have reminded me that there?s nothing more valuable than my health. My work and personal life can?t continue to grow and develop if I?m not my best self, and I can?t be my best self if I?m not getting the most out of every workout.
What about you? Would you ever consider hiring a personal trainer to help with your fitness?
