Hamline University names Jason Verdugo next athletic director

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Jason Verdugo has served as Hamline?s head baseball coach for the past 11 seasons. In that role, he has led the university?s baseball program to its first MIAC tournament championship and NCAA tournament victory, broken the school?s record for wins, coached two pitchers to national rankings, and was named the 2006 MIAC Coach of the Year.

For the past eight years, he has also served as director of compliance for all of Hamline?s 19 sports teams and has spent the past 11 years involved in fundraising for Hamline?s athletic program. From 2004-2007, Verdugo was assistant athletic director for Hamline.

?Jason Verdugo has a wealth of experience in athletic leadership and in working with student athletes, parents, and fellow coaches,? Hamline University President Linda Hanson said. ?He is a natural fit for this role, and we look forward to the strengths he brings in helping to further cultivate and shape a thriving, robust athletic program for Hamline.?

Verdugo is also currently a pitching coach and first base coach for the Saint Paul Saints baseball program. His work with the Saints will end when he begins his new role as Hamline's athletic director. Additionally, Verdugo is co-founder and co-director of Next Level Baseball Training, a program that allows 12-18 year olds an opportunity to train throughout the year.

"I'm humbled by the opportunity President Hanson has given me. I'm very excited to lead a group of motivated coaches and athletes who aspire to make Hamline athletics a great experience,?Verdugo said about his new role. ?I'm hopeful that my effort and energy will build upon the momentum that Bob Beeman has established during his time at Hamline as athletic director. I'm looking forward to building some great relationships with all of the athletes and alumni.?

Verdugo is currently pursuing his master of education degree in athletic coaching leadership and has completed post-baccalaureate coursework in secondary education. He holds a bachelor?s degree in history and minor in education from Arizona State University.

President Linda Hanson extends her thanks to the athletic director interview committee, chaired by Dean of Students, Alan Sickbert. The committee includes the following additional members: Athletic Budget Director Beth Rittler Bjork ?91, Piper Athletic Association President Doron Clark ?00, Alumnus Steve Kufus ?68, Faculty Athletic Representative and Physics Professor Jerry Artz, and Admissions Director Milyon Trulove for their hard work and diligent efforts in reviewing qualifications and interviewing the candidates.

Verdugo will determine a transition plan for Hamline?s next head baseball coach.
